A foolish person is often described as someone who lacks good judgment or common sense. In fact, as we study the scripture, we can safely conclude that a foolish person is someone who disregards God’s word altogether. They also tend to ignore or refuse to consider sound advice when making decisions. Today, I want to share three common characteristics of foolish people.
- A foolish person does not take the consequences of sinful behavior seriously. The Bible says in Proverbs 10:23, “A fool finds pleasure in evil conduct…” That is to say, a foolish person actually enjoys doing wrong. They somehow believe that they are an exception to the rule and that they are exempt from negative consequences. It’s like a joke to them. As a result, they run head first into disaster.
- A foolish person never learns from their mistakes. The Bible makes this comparison in Proverbs 26:11, “As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.” Foolish people are known for repeating the same errors over and over again. They never seem to learn anything from their past mistakes. It is foolishness to continue to repeat the same negative behavior and expect positive results.
- Their foolish behavior negatively impacts those who interact with them. The Bible gives us a stern warning in Proverbs 13:20, “He who walks with the wise grow wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.” In other words, you don’t want to become collateral damage of someone else’s foolishness. When you know that an individual lacks good judgement and willfully disregards God’s word, the best thing you can do is distance yourself from them. You don’t want to become the unintended target of someone else’s foolishness.
A foolish person, in my opinion, is someone who lacks good judgment and willfully disregards God’s word. They are toxic people who shun good advice, and they negatively impact those who choose to interact with them. You can always recognize a foolish person by their lust for sin and their inability to learn from their mistakes. A foolish person brings all kinds of unnecessary difficulties unto themselves and those around them. Whatever you choose to do in life, don’t play the fool!
