In this life we are presented with countless opportunities. Some of these opportunities are absolutely amazing, while others are definitely awful. Yet, it is how we choose to respond to these opportunities that help to determine our future success and failure in life. So today, I want to share with you three Origins of Opportunity.
- God sends opportunities your way to bless you! God given opportunities come to you in many different forms. They can come in the form of a good position, a fighting chance, a new prospect, favorable circumstances, an opening for advancement, or even a big break. For example, God opened a doorway of opportunity for the Apostle Paul in 1Corinthians 16:9 which states, “Because a great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me.” Paul lets us know that with every God given opportunity comes a level of opposition. Always remember, just because it seems hard doesn’t mean it’s not God!
- Man sends opportunities your way to distract you! One thing I know, people will highjack your schedule, if you let them. Well-meaning and opportunist people alike, will present you with countless reasons why you should participate in their agenda. The opportunities people bring your way can be overwhelming at times. So before you commit, make sure it’s God’s will for your life. Otherwise, you will become distracted and drawn away from the things God really wants you to give your undivided time and attention to. Moses prayed in Psalm 90:12, “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” In other words, Moses asked God to teach us how to properly manage our time. Like Moses, we should pray and ask God to teach us time management, so we won’t become sidetracked with trivial matters.
- The devil sends opportunities your way to trap you! The devil is a master at using, so called, “golden opportunities” as bait to get you to walk through the wrong doors in life. He will use a flirtatious person to get you to walk through the doorway of adultery. He will use an approved loan to get you to walk through the doorway of unmanaged debt. He will also use a busy schedule to walk you through the doorway to stress and burnout. In fact, 1 Peter 5:8 warns us, “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” Don’t let the devil tempt you with the wrong opportunity.
Yes, in this life we are presented with countless opportunities. God sends some of these opportunities to bless you. Man presents other opportunities to distract you. And the devil dispatches some to trap you. I leave you with the words of King Solomon as he stood at the door of opportunity found in 1 Kings 3:9, “So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong….”
